Red River Home

Going Home

I long for my home in the country
to breathe the nice fresh air
wake to the sound of the mockingbird
without worry, stress or care.

On my way to the Cajun Crossroads
where the moon will seem oh so bright
pinetrees will nod in greeting,
and I am sure more stars come out at night.

My dog will be there to greet me,
My music, my writing and love
tis a place where time stands still
lifes treasures from the lord above.

"Little House" in the Big Louisiana "Woods". Located in Central Louisiana, Avoyelles Parish, also known as the Cajun Crossroads. This is Effie a very small town about 10 miles North of Marksville. A lot of History happened here around Civil War days. It is said that a battle was fought right out in my back yard. But I guess that could be said for a lot of the back yards in the South.

This home was built around 1900, by Dr. LaFargue. He had a local medical practice and at one time there was a small Doctor's Office on the corner of the property. I have heard that Dr. LaFargue was a drinking man, and when "under the influence" would shoot bullets through the walls of the front room. Well, I didn't find any bullet holes, but then alot of patching has been done in the last 100 years.

I love this home, with it's sagging floors and cracked walls. It is a tad unlevel, but I seriously doubt it is any danger of falling down.

The Red River

This is a place to relax. Time to slow down and smell the Magnolia's and the honeysuckle. At this time of year, near dark you can see the fireflies in the bushes and trees. The hummingbirds live in the pecan trees just outside my back door, and they come to drink from both the feeders that I have out, and from my flowers. I doubt anyone who is currently living in the city and fighting their way through late afternoon traffic can visulize the peace and serenity of this beautiful place.

The Red River Near Dusk

This site is basically pictures of the South, in Louisiana and around Marksville and Effie. Some of my poetry is here, but this site is more for history, pictures, stories, and information.

I love gardening, and it seems I know as much or more than the man at Lowe's so I guess I should have his job. There is hardly ever a time when I go in there, that someone doesn't ask my advice about some plant or another. I picked up alot of information regarding the care and nurturing of all kinds of annuals and perenials from my Grandmother and my Mother. We are gardeners by birth. I don't think any of my Mother's family are truly happy unless they have a good amount of dirt under their fingernails.

Music and Poetry are very important to me. All poet's think that their work is important, if for no other reason than to release pent up emotions. There is truth in poetry.

The Cajun Crossroads

LaFargue House, Effie LA, the Nea House now. hehe

The LaFargue house was built around the turn of the century. It has 14 foot ceilings, and is sagging in places. But then aren't we all. smile........

My Wildflower Bed in Effie

back yard in Effie

There is alot of yard around the house, most in the front, but at least a good acre in the back. Just to keep the grass mowed is a full time commitment. But keeping it looking like a park takes dedication.

A Moments Pause

A lilting song, a warmth it brings
I stop and pause, the hurry seems
so less demanding, a moments change
a sparrows voice quickly rearrange
my hurried frenzy, my chosen chores
and I pen a new list of priorites.
First will be to breathe of clean fresh air
and appreciate all winged friends living there.
Canadian geese, a long black V, swifly fly
overhead a silouette, against the sky.
Does this mean that winters end
is just around the seasons bend.
The exhilertion that I now feel
gives me strength for what is real.
So if no time is left when day is done
and least my heart is full of sun.
For I truly feel when life is over
you can't return to smell the clover.
